What was the last book that you couldn’t finish?
All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr - I can't remember why.
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear “vampire story”?
Twilight. I know Meyer gets a lot of criticism for Twilight. The films weren't great, like many many adaptions, but I found the books were good. Not sure I want to read the gender reversal version of it though.
What about you? Do you like Twilight?
Do you remember the book/series that gave you a love of reading? What was it?
It was Harry Potter. When I was little, I believed the films came out before the books. Then one day, I saw Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in Sainsbury's— a supermarket in the UK. Little me looked at the book, thinking:
But there isn't a film yet.
I went to one of the staff near the floor and asked about the book. "It's the Sixth one I think". Great. I thought. They released the book before the film this time!
So the first book I read—that was not one of those weird 20-page books the school got you to read—was the last book in the Harry Potter series.
Yet, despite reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows first, I didn't realise Dumbledore had died until I read all the books in order. My experience reading the last Harry Potter book the first time around was anger at Dumbledore for abandoning Harry and letting him leave Hogwarts with Voldemort on the loose, I didn't realise that the abandonment Harry felt was because of his death.
Certainly not my most Ravenclaw moment... and I am often told I am one of the most Ravenclaw kind-of-person my friends have met.
What are your three “desert island books”?
Ugh! Three! Really? Fine, I'll try.
I think Fearless by Tim Lott would definitely be one of them. It is about girls locked up in a prison after the government learn their parents are terrorists. But the prison is a secret, to the outside world, these girls are in a boarding school. Love it! It reminds me of Blame.
The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness. In a world where you can hear everyone's thoughts - even the thoughts of your pet dog, would it drive you insane? Todd lives in such a world and he has never seen a girl in his life.
Hmmm... Should I choose Blame by Simon Mayo or The Fire Within by Chris De Lacy. As I said, Blame is similar to Fearless but at the same time, it is also very, very different. Ant and Mattie are in prison with their foster parents for a crime their biological parents and their foster grandparents committed.
However, The Fire Within is the reason I love polar bears so much: Note, it has nothing to do with polar bears. Lucy and her mother make clay dragons but these dragons are special and David learns this when he moves in as their lodger.
How do you feel about love triangles? How about in stories that aren’t primarily of the romance genre?
I hate Romance books. I don't mind love triangles in any genre, as long as it doesn't take over the book! But on a general basis, I avoid the romance genre like it is the plague. The only exception is the book, Amy and Matthew by Cammie McGovern.
However, love triangles in a genre that is not dependent on romance tend to be better. I think this is because I can focus on the main part of the story if I chose to and groan at the love triangle if I want.
What would you say is your favourite genre? Least favourite?
Least favourite is above. Romance. Blah! Favourite is probably fantasy or steam punk.
Do you make a point of reading the book before seeing the movie?
Now I know the truth, Yes.
Paperbacks or ebooks?
Hardbacks but love e-books too. Paperbacks are too fragile for me but my CP also makes it hard for me to read a physical copy—there have been times when I have needed to for university or something, so I have a book chair for that.
If you had to go out for coffee with the protagonist of the last book you read, who would you be going for coffee with? How do you think it would go?
The little kid, Ella, from The Longest Whale Song. I'll probably be regretting giving her coffee as she'll be a nervous wreck that is also bouncing off the walls.
I wouldn't enjoy it either, I don't like the taste of coffee. It gives me a headache. Maybe tea instead? With milk. I am British after all.
If you HAD to swap lives with a fictional character, which one would you choose?
............. I'm thinking............ I'm thinking. ...... I can't think of any...... OH the Doctor! Then I can see history and be home on time and have all the time I want to have... but then danger follows the Doctor so maybe not.
Nah, I'm happy being me.
